married woman

Every time I see Atherton, I smile and am surprised again.
We finally got married.
The wedding was beautiful. The day flew by! Breakfast with beautiful women, getting ready to meet my groom, dear sweet friends and family overwhelmingly giving their time to set up/tear down the whole thing, grandmothers walking up the 22 stairs to smile in 102 heat for pictures, adorable children running around and dancing their pants off, coming down the stairs to see my man - the one I waited for, sweet moments with my parents, crazy pictures in the photo booth, delicious cake, puppy chow and fondue, fireworks, running through the rain to come home, finally with my husband! I am the luckiest.
Thank you all who came, prayed, encouraged and please continue to do so.
We laughed and laughed on our honeymoon. He's good for me. Everyday.
and today we killed our first mouse. (we're hoping it's also the last)

Our Story

The quick story is that we met in College. The long story is a shade more involved than that:
We met when Dave was just a freshman in college and Lisel was a junior. At this point in the story it is important to note that Lisel is waaaaayyyyy older than Dave (or so he would be quick to point out). Lisel was an old pro at the college life, she was a soccer player, an R.A., had her group of friends set up and was halfway to graduating with her degree in Human Services. Also, she was adorable. This point is not necessary for the story but it is just good to know.
Dave on the other hand was just trying to figure this stuff out. He had no official major, and pretty much no clue in general... very similar to the Dave that you may know today. Dave also became glad in that freshman year that Lisel had already developed her group of friends, because without those friends we may have never met. You see, Dave was chasing some other girl who just so happened to be friends with Lisel. The first time that Dave and Lisel really talked was when Dave went to Lisel's dorm to hang out with this other girl for a game night. On his way there however, he stopped to talk to Lisel who was in the lobby of the dorm doing her R.A. duties of making sure that no guys are getting too frisky with the girls. More specifically she was in the kitchen in the lobby of the dorm. What she was making is a little bit fuzzy, but we like to think it was one of her go to desserts called "Man getting cookies". It would make sense if that were what she was making because it didn't take more than about 10 minutes for Dave to realize that she was "getting" him. This part of the story is called, "The Excitement"
Dave and Lisel shortly thereafter began officially dating. The date was March 15, 2002. For a little over a year, Dave and Lisel were together and, well, lets just say that they had their ups and downs. Round-about the time that Lisel graduated in the spring of 2003, we had to make a decision about what was next for us. As a good amount of the people who will be reading this know both Dave and Lisel well, it should come as no surprise that Dave screwed something up. When facing the decision of pursuing marriage or going our own ways, Dave unintelligibly decided on the latter. This portion of the story is called "The Mistake"
This could be the worst story in the history of the world...... but it isn't.
We did go our own ways, and made our own choices, some good and some bad. We lost contact and took radically different paths. All in all we spent about seven years apart. This part of the story is called "The Wandering"
In July of 2010, Dave was going to be moving from California to the greatest city on the face of this planet, Denver, Colorado. He had heard through various channels that Lisel was living in Denver as well, and despite many nerves and emotions, he contacted Lisel to see if she would be willing to just meet up some time to catch up. We did. It was at a Barnes and Noble book store sidewalk in July, 2010. What was going to be a brief meeting, turned into a long conversation and a walk to a frozen yogurt shop. By the way, frozen yogurt is terrible.
From there, it has been the blink of an eye until today. All of the things that attracted the two of us to each other 10 years ago were the same thing that drew us back together today. It is interesting... Dave was faced with the same exact decision in the spring of 2011 that he face in the spring of 2002, only this time he didn't screw it up. This is the part of the story we call, "The Redemption".
After growing closer together, tons of conversations with each other, and with each other's families, Dave decided to right a tremendous wrong. On March 15, 2011, exactly 9 years after Dave and Lisel started dating, Dave asked Lisel to marry him on the sidewalk outside of that Barnes and Noble. The only difference is that this time there was no frozen yogurt. You can check out the tab on "our proposal" to get more details on that, but spoiler alert, she said yes!
We are now super excited to share our joy with all of you on July 2, 2011. Our story is a little crazy and convoluted, but it is ours and we love it. Some of the chapters were certainly more fun to live through than others, but they have all come together to shape what is, in our humble opinion, the greatest love story of all times! If you are able to make it to the ceremony, then you will get to share with us as we start the next chapter that we are calling, "The Rest of Our Lives"

love story

friends it's really happening...
we're getting married. we bought furniture tonight. I move in to our place next Saturday. Invitations have been sent (if yours hasn't arrived maybe I don't have your address?) showers are being planned. my dress is being made in Indonesia. shoes are adorable.

what a world ago eight years have been. yet still a beautiful and still messy part of our story.

Isaiah 61:
good news to the poor
comfort to the broken hearted
captives will be released
prisoners will be freed.
crown of beauty for ashes
joyous blessing instead of mourning
festive praise instead of despair
rebuild the ancient ruins
instead of shame and dishonor you will possess a double share of honor
everlasting joy will be yours

I love my story with Dave. It's quite the story of what God does for us, his redemption, for something bigger than ourselves.

thanks for being a part of the story, I'm looking forward to celebrating with you all on 7/2:)
